Welcome to Wellness Pacific Coast.com, the blog of Traver H. Boehm – Licensed Acupuncturist, Herbalist, Strength & Conditioning Coach, Wellness Coach and Professional Speaker.

About me:
I grew up in Wilton Connecticut, the son of an engineer/lawyer for a father and a health food junkie (with a small chocolate problem) for a mother.  I was blessed to have far more energy than anyone knew what to do with and was therefore thrown into any and every physical activity that my parents could get me to.  Soccer, swimming, judo, skateboarding, skiing, karate – you name it, I did it and there was born my love of sport.

At the age of 10 my family up and moved to Tokyo for 5 years and I got to experience life as a tow-headed minority in a foreign country, but also be exposed to kids from literally over a hundred different nationalities.  Being an international student is a unique experience and one that I will always hold dear.  To this very day, I still enjoy the informal gatherings of people that knew each other only for a short time over 20 years ago, but still have a very strong bond.  Go Titans.

Upon returning to Connecticut from Japan, my health took a turn for the worse.  Returning to the luscious grasses, molds and pollens of CT after living in a city for 5 years turned me into a sneezy, wheezy, generally pretty sick human being, and thus began my interest in alternative medicine and holistic health.  I focused my insatiable curiosity on why I was the only one that I knew that couldn’t eat wheat without my throat closing up, why I couldn’t drink milk without getting a sinus infection and generally, why the heck was I so unhealthy?  This question was put on the back burner for a number of years, but was always present in my life.

It wasn’t until I graduated from Boston College with a degree in Philosophy that I began my quest to figuring out exactly what to do with my life.  Thus began a decade long adventure that had me working as a healthfood store manager, a professional bodyguard, as a real estate appraiser and investor, and as a professional mixed martial artist and personal trainer.  I was fortunate enough to spend months at a time bouncing around the globe on protection details, to get to meet hundreds of people through real estate deals, as well as get inside access to the exciting world of professional fighting.  All the while though, I had the nagging suspicion that I wasn’t doing what I really wanted to do.

One of the last security jobs that I had took me out the United States and onto a boat for almost 6 straight months.  It was during this break from all things American, all media, television, newspapers, and other forms of influence that I had a chance to sit down with myself, a journal and do some serious soul searching.  Bodyguarding was fascinating yet insanely boring at the same time, fighting was a trip unto itself but not a sustainable career, I liked the homeowners more than the real estate business itself, but more importantly – I never felt that I was making a difference for anyone with those vocations.  It was on this trip that I made the decision that my life should be dedicated to furthering the health and quality of the life of others.

I got off of the boat, turned in my notice and enrolled in Yo-San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine to study acupuncture and herbal medicine.  The four year program at Yo-San opened my eyes completely to the power of holistic medicine and more importantly, the power of prevention.  For the first time I learned just how important nutrition is to our daily health, the power of meditation and stress relief as form of healing, and how completely out of whack most people are when it comes to their health and the information that they’re getting and basing everyday life decisions upon.  No bueno.

A month after graduation I packed up my life and moved out the concrete jungle of Los Angeles and up to heaven on earth – Santa Barbara, California.  Holy smokes is this place gorgeous!  Never before had I found a place with so much natural beauty, so many health oriented people, interesting talks and performances as well as an abundance of outdoor fun.  Santa Barbara, you are awesome.

The move up here was a specific one to partner with my best friend from college and open up CrossFit Pacific Coast – Pacific Coast Strength, Conditioning and Recovery – Santa Barbara’s premiere fitness and recovery facility.  We wanted to take ordinary people of all ages and get them into the best shape of their lives – literally.  We do this through a variety of team oriented training routines as well as providing them with a plethora of health and wellness education.  Our goal is to develop functional strength and elite human performance.  We meet our goal every single day.

As part of the marketing process for CPC/PCSCR I called upon a number of local Chiropractors and was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Marc Grandle and his wife Karen at Alki Art and Wellness Institute.  Dr. Grandle and I hit it off immediately through our shared vision of providing world- class health care and education to our patients as well as our love of surfing and preparing for the upcoming zombie apocalypse.

Karen Grandle was one of my first patients here in Santa Barbara and through her persuasive powers I was offered a position at Alki Wellness as their acupuncturist and speaker.  I jumped at the chance and have found an amazing home for my wellness practice as well as committed team of like-minded practitioners to work with.  Team Alki rocks.

Today I split my time between CPC and Alki Wellness as well as travel around the country giving talks and leading seminars on a variety of health, wellness and self defense related topics.  As the current president of Santa Barbara Toastmasters Club 5, my talks have taken place everywhere from high level boardrooms to the inside of a MMA cages.  As a Wellness Coach I am blessed to consult with people around the world that want to increase the quality of their health and enjoy their lives to the fullest.  I could not ask for a more fulfilling career and am one of those really obnoxious people that you hear about that actually wakes up excited to go to work.

About this blog:

This blog is where I dump my health and wellness related thoughts as well as ask the important questions that I don’t think are getting asked enough.  What you read here is my opinion, but it is one developed through thousands of hours of working with real people who have real health issues.  I do my best to respond to any and all questions in a timely manner, so feel free to ask away in the comments section or email me personally at traver@wellnesspacificcoast.com.

The blog is updated every Monday and Thursday mornings, but feel free to sign up for the RSS feed, newsletter and other means of notification that it’s been updated.  I do sell products in the e-store and want to state that they are the products that I either use myself or have, in the case of ChocolaToa, developed myself.  Therefore I stand by their efficacy and have no further vested interest in their sales other than passing on products that I know works well.

For Speaking, Seminars and Coaching opportunities please feel free to find information in their respective sections of this site.

Thank you all for your support of this blog and for your interest in your own health and wellness.

Yours in health,

Traver H. Boehm L.Ac, Dipl. O.M.
